PROGRAM SUMMARY

This project is much more than a study abroad project. This is a meeting of two cities designed to...

  • Train high school students in Newark and Belfast to become Global Peace Ambassadors

  • Build a legacy of sustained understanding and cooperation between the two cities

  • Create a documentary web series that chronicles the entire experience 

  • Create a photographic exhibit the chronicles the experience

Additional expected outcomes:

  • Explore how cultural identity is used to help young people reengage with education

  • Provide young people with innovative and exciting arts (photography, video, vlogging) based interventions

  •  improved multiculturalism through cultural immersion and sharing of cultural identities. 

  •  Increased sense of global identities and how as members of society we can contribute to each others learning

  •  Increased awareness of local and global issues through an agenda set by the young people using online conferencing and vlogging.

  •  Development of conflict resolution and critical thinking, life and educational skills

Methedology

  • Eagle Academy Newark scholars will be selected for the project through a process that will include

    • Read article: Foriegn Yet Familiar: Program brings Irish, African American teens together by Peter Smith Pittsburgh Post Gazette August 3, 2018

    • Required Essay: Answer questions related to the article?​

    • Personal Interview

    • All participating Newark scholars must successfully complete a required course that will cover:

      • The Newark Rebellion (1970's)​

      • The Belfast Rebellion (1970's)

      • History of Newark and the History of Belfast

      • 4 "collaborative" online classes with contemporaries from Belfast.

      • Class on photography and vlogging

 

  • All participating scholars are required to create and manage a video blog (vlog) of this experience that will be available to view exclusively through the project website.

  • Eagle Academy Newark scholars will travel to Belfast Ireland in December 8 - December 16  2018. Scholars will stay in Ireland for approximately 10 days and participate in a series of workshops, trips, tours, discussions and other activities. See ABOUT page for more details. ​​

Expected Outcomes

  1. Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark scholars begin training to become Global Peace Ambassadors

    • Learn about Newark Rebellion​

    • Learn about Belfast Rebellion

    • Write essays/weekly classes (2)

    • Learn about Global Peace Ambassador Program

    • Complete "Intro to Photography" course

    • Participating scholars will also create video journals that will be posted on the project website/social media.

  2. Project outcomes include:

    • Documentary web series filmed and produced by: TBA ​​

    • Photography exhibit featuring photography of the trip by Newark Photographer Tamara Fleming.

    • Plan for an ongoing project between the two cities.​​
