The following assignment is to be completed as your summer reading assignment.  You must read the novel Divergent  by Virginia Roth.  The book can be purchased online or at most bookstores.  It can usually be found at most public libraries.  

 

This assignment will be the 1st assessment grade for the marking period. It is due the 1st week of school.

Summer Reading Activity

 

Directions: After reading the assigned reading for Divergent, by Virginia Roth, please complete both Part 1 and Part 2 of the reading activities below.  Enjoy your reading experience and remember that the assignment will be due upon your return to school in September 2019.  Thank you in advance for your hard work and creativity! 

 

Part 1: After reading the novel, Divergent by Virginia Roth,  answer the questions below on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure to answer in complete sentences.  Your responses should reflect an understanding and analysis of the text. For each response, please present textual evidence to defend your thinking.  

 

  1. Which faction would you choose? Explain your answer using your reading of Divergent to support your answer. 

  2.  Select a main character to focus on.  Explain how this character changes over the course of the novel.  Cite textual evidence to support your response. Be sure to address:

    1.  how the character was initially, 

    2. what changed the character, and

    3.  in what ways they changed. 

 

3.  Identify 2 central conflicts.  Explain whether the conflicts are internal or external.  Are the conflicts resolved? If so, how? If not, what is in the way of a resolution?  Cite evidence and explain your answer.

Part 2: Create a poster representing a key scene or theme from the novel.  The poster should be creative and should give the viewer a glimpse into the novel.  You may draw, make a collage, paint,etc., to create your poster. Please include a description explaining what the poster reflects either on a separate sheet of paper or an index card.
